FC Bayern: Sadio Mané in the goal crisis? That’s what the numbers say

Sadio Mané is increasingly being criticized at Bayern Munich. Dietmar Hamann even sees a looming problem within the team structure if the Senegalese does not perform soon. Missing goals and missing connection – what do the facts and figures say about the criticism?

Hasan Salihamidzic is currently protective of his attacker. “Sadio still needs a little time, he has to get used to it,” said Bayern’s sporting director sports picture.

So far, Mané has played almost every competitive game in Munich from the start. He is set under coach Julian Nagelsmann. After a good initial phase and a few goals, however, he then fell into a hole.

This also increased the criticism of the new signing from Liverpool FC. Missing goals and poor connection to the Bayern game are the biggest points of criticism. But what’s the fuss about Mané? SPOX and GOAL do the reality check.

the picture writes, for example, of a “goal crisis”. “So far, Sadio Mané has been set,” commented expert Dietmar Hamann in the sports picture: “If he performs, that’s not a problem. But if the teammates see that he’s in the starting XI in every game, even though he doesn’t perform well, that’s a tricky thing.”

Sadio Mané at Bayern: What was said?

“He doesn’t seem integrated to me,” Hamann continued to analyze: “In Liverpool he had a playing centre-forward in Roberto Firmino, who put the ball down for him. Now he was in the center himself in most games: he’s just there half as strong as on the side.”

In the first six competitive games, Mané scored five times, after which he did not score a single goal in five games. But is that unusual for the right foot? Last season, between November 24 and December 28, he failed to score in nine competitive games in a row. He only managed one assist each against AC Milan in the Champions League and against Newcastle in the Premier League.

In previous seasons, Mané repeatedly had phases of three, four or even five games in a row in which he was not directly involved in a goal. He scored every 179 minutes in 269 competitive games for Liverpool FC and was directly involved in a goal every 127 minutes. For Bayern he currently scores every 160 minutes.

There are no major abnormalities in other statistics either. With 3.7 shots and 0.65 expected goals per 90 minutes, Mané is according to the StatsBomb-Data from FBref currently even more often and more dangerously involved in final situations than in the past four seasons with the Reds. On the other hand, a clear decline in values can be observed for ball contacts and passes.

0.56 assists per 90 minutes is by far the lowest value in comparison. In addition, Mané is only on the ball 38.9 times on average and plays around ten fewer passes than for Liverpool FC.

The fact that the Senegalese basically has a problem as a center forward cannot be seen from past data. For Liverpool FC he scored 19 times in 29 games as a central attacker and prepared four goals.

Nevertheless, Nagelsmann used him twice as a left winger – without any noticeable success. For FC Bayern, it will probably be important to find a role for Mané in which he is better integrated than now and can use his qualities as a playmaker, but in which he can also continue to get into good final situations himself.
