FC Bayern Munich – 1. FC Cologne 3: 2: Work victory thanks to Gnabry and Musiala – whistles against Sane

Julian Nagelsmann won his first home win as coach of FC Bayern. On the 2nd Bundesliga matchday, the Munich team prevailed 3-2 (0-0) against 1. FC Köln. Leroy Sane had a bitter evening.

In the run-up to the game, the record champions and his fans paid homage to their recently deceased club legend Gerd Müller. “Dear Gerd, you taught Bayern how to win,” said Honorary President Uli Hoeneß. “We will miss you very much and will never forget you.”

Bayern coach Nagelsmann only made one personnel change compared to the 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund in the Supercup: Nianzou slipped into the starting line-up instead of Stanisic. The home side acted for the first time under Nagelsmann with a three-man chain, the actual left-back Davies had a lot of offensive freedom.

Sane acted as the right rail player. A role in which the national player clearly felt uncomfortable. At first, Nagelsmann’s match plan did not work because Sane allowed himself to be carried away with too many mistakes in concentration, but also because the men next to him developed too little power in the last third. The Cologne, whipped by the unmistakable Baumgart on the sideline, worked hard against the ball, but the Munich offered simply too little. This acknowledged parts of the 20,000 spectators with whistles – especially against the hapless Sane.

Nagelsmann reacted to the break and switched to the tried and tested 4-2-3-1. Nianzou and Sane stayed in the cabin, but Stanisic and Musiala came. The latter initiated the lead through Lewandowski with his second strong action (50th). And when Gnabry used a Müller cross to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards, everything pointed to an easy home win (59th).

FC Bayern Munich – 1. FC Cologne: The analysis

FC Bayern: Neuer – Nianzou (46th Stanisic), Upamecano, Süle – Sane (46th Musiala), Kimmich, Goretzka (66th Tolisso), Davies (87th C. Richards) – Müller, Gnabry (76th Choupo-Moting) – Lewandowski

1. FC Cologne: T. Horn – Ehizibue, Mere, Czichos, Hector – Skhiri – Thielmann, Ljubicic (76th Schaub), Kainz (69th Andersson) – Uth (66th Duda), Modeste (76th Lemperle)

Gnabry is cooking again. The national player built on his good performance in the Supercup (an assist) and scored his first brace in the league in almost a year. With 15 duels, he also played most of the time on the FCB side.

Sane remains a mystery. Once again Bayern’s offensive game passed the 45 million man, he had only 28 ball contacts in 45 minutes and only won 25 percent of his duels, plus some inaccuracies in the passing game. His substitution at break was logical.
