Champions League – Round of 16 first leg: Ferland Mendy delivers a tasteless Real Madrid against Atalanta Bergamo

Favorite and very quickly outnumbered, Real Madrid experienced all the sorrows in the world to get the best of Atalanta Bergamo this Wednesday evening, in their knockout stages of the Champions League. The Merengue were finally saved five minutes from the end of the match thanks to an inspiration from Ferland Mendy, winning on the smallest of the margins (1-0).

After two consecutive eliminations at the stage of the round of 16, Real Madrid had the opportunity on Wednesday to prove that they were accidents of course, unworthy of its European standing. But against Atalanta, Zinédine Zidane’s men made a very dull performance, against an opponent yet reduced to ten against eleven after only 17 minutes of play. While the outcome of a goalless draw had become most likely, Ferland Mendy popped up in the middle of the night to shake up his teammates and give them a victory as crucial as it was painful to achieve.
